NASA develops the In-Time Aviation Safety Management System (IASMS) to predict and prevent drone hazards in real time. Through testing and simulations, the system aims to alert operators to potential issues before they escalate.
“If everything is going as planned with your flight, you won’t notice your in-time aviation safety management system working,” said Michael Vincent, NASA acting deputy project manager with the System-Wide Safety project at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. “It’s before you encounter an unusual situation, like loss of navigation or communications, that the IASMS provides an alert to the drone operator.”
The IASMS, integrated with other systems, aims to enable routine drone flights with increased safety. NASA's efforts support industry developments in electric air taxis and drones.

Virginia Tech researchers have enabled journalists to use drones, approved by the FAA with help from Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership, to capture news from above.
Sinclair has met FAA compliance for flying drones safely over people, allowing for newsgathering without waivers. Through rigorous training at MAAP, Sinclair ensures its drone pilots are skilled and knowledgeable in safety procedures. The FAA's 2021 Operations over People rule for drones establishes safety measures that drones must meet. MAAP and Virginia Tech's Center for Injury Biomechanics developed a means of compliance accepted by the FAA in 2021.
This allowed for the approval of the first compliant drone in 2022, providing Sinclair with newsgathering flexibility while prioritizing safety.
